Mount Pleasant's Brewery Creek and the Natural Landscape of Vancouver

Guide: Bruce Macdonald is an avid local historian. His book, Vancouver a Visual History, chronicles 120 years growth in Vancouver in detail. He worked for many years with  Mount Pleasant's Brewery Creek Historical Society, who mapped out the path of this lost stream with numerous markers, plaques and even a recreation of the valley of Brewery Creek using native plants. He recently completed a history of Mount Pleasant for the City of Vancouver.

Address: Brewery Creek Native Plant Community Garden, 375 East 5th Avenue at Brunswick Street
Description:

The amazing original natural landscape of Vancouver is almost entirely gone today, but our city is so young we have an usually good record of what has been lost. The area of Vancouver supported of an impressive variety of plants and animals, bird life and sea life. In addition to being located on one of the largest salmon rivers in the world, within the city local rainfall formed numerous creeks and swamps and supported an old growth forest that grew some of the largest and tallest trees in the world.

Mount Pleasant's Brewery Creek was one of the larger creeks in Vancouver. In  the 1890s the Victorian community of Mount Pleasant located around this useful source of water, and Mount Pleasant became the only community in Vancouver to develop around a creek. This interesting and unique history has affected the modern Mount Pleasant in a number of ways.

Special Instructions:

Mostly sidewalks. Wear walking shoes. Walk is child-friendly. Rain or shine. Suggested donations of $5 - $10 welcome.

NOTE: We are a Non-Profit Society who is happy to give our volunteer time for these very important historical walks. In the two previous years of walks, MANY OF THOSE WHO DID REGISTER NEVER CAME to the planned walk. Some had registered groups of 3 or 5 people each. As a result, others who registered later were disappointed because our quota had been reached. Also the historians who had worked hard to prepare their material only spoke to a small number of people.

We ask that you ONLY REGISTER IF THERE IS A VERY GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL BE JOINING US on that day. Please be respectful of the work the organizers and historians are putting into these events and follow these guidelines. We look forward to seeing you at our walks!
